Well, I believe people switch language because of the following reason
1. Ease of Conversation: People switch language during conversation because of ease of using the other language. For example, a person talking in English may not be comfortable or might not have better flow using English Language but switching to the local dialects makes the conversation more easier with better flow.
2. For better Explanation and understanding between both parties involved: Sometimes, people switch language during conversation for better understanding among the parties involved. The person talking for example maybe able to explain something better using another language apart from the language of conversation. And it is also possible that the other party will not understand well with the initial language used for explanation, so it is better to switch language that both parties involved will understand. Conversation is better when all parties understands one another.
3. Comfortability: For some people, it is easier and better to switch language because it makes them more comfortable during conversations.
4. Same Ethnicity: When people are talking and they discover that the person they are talking/conversing with is from their ethnic groups, they will be happy to switch if they had been using another language say English to converse. An example is when an Ibo man discover that he's talking with his fellow Ibo man, they switch language immediately.
5. Audience: The audience at which one is speaking with also determined language switch. They tend to be a determining factor in the switch. When the person speaking sees that the audience consent to the language switch then language switch is possible
